About Us

Welcome to New Mexico, known as the Land of Enchantment! And to Texas West of the Pecos, featuring El Paso and the Big Bend National Park. We especially welcome you to the website of the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande.

The Diocese was formed in 1952 from the Missionary District of New Mexico and Southwest Texas. In fact, we still call ourselves "a missionary people." Having in mind the grand historical heritage of the Spanish exploration, of trade with Mexico through the Camino Real, through Mexico City, El Paso del Norte, and the Santa Fe Trail which runs right through our Diocesan Camp and Conference Center called Camp Stoney, the diocese covers the entire state of New Mexico and the area west of the Pecos River which includes El Paso and western Texas to the border with Mexico along the Rio Grande. We are experiencing growth in what is geographically the largest diocese in the contiguous United States.
